Personality

What is your character most afraid of? How are they defined by this fear? (100-300 words) Commitment. After his disastrous relationship with his ex-boyfriend, Jonah, he's afraid that the next person is going to be just like him. Charming and funny in the beginning, and abusive once they have what they want. He tends to jump from person to person, one-night stand to one-night stand - just to get some physical contact. He doesn't want to get attached to anyone one person, including people who would try and be his friend. He's often standoffish, and would much rather go home and read than spend time with people. He will turn down social drinking (unless it's to go pick up men) or outings with co-workers just to avoid getting close to anyone.

What is your character's greatest desire? How are they defined by this desire? (100-300 words) Jamie's greatest desire is to be loved by someone, not that he'd admit to it. He longs to be loved by someone who will treat him with respect, who will encourage his interests, and just care for him. His only relationship was with Jonah Marxberry, who was emotionally abusive for much of their time together and eventually turned physically abusive - which was his whole reason for leaving him (and hiding from him. And eventually leaving London entirely). Jonah constantly belittled him for his dream to be a sci-fi/fantasy writer, even making him change his majour from writing to journalism for a more "sustainable" profession. Jonah had been in his life for much of his youth, dating him from secondary school well into university - so his longing to be loved is deeply ingrained. Jonah only wanted to own him.

How will not having memories change your character? What core personality traits, if any, will change? How? (200-300 words) One of the major ways that Jamie will be different without his memories is that he will be more sociable and show more willingness to trust new people. While he displays some level of trust with strangers when he picks up men in bars, he's overly distrustful of people around him and anticipates the worst of them. He's standoffish and cold, typically waiting for people to approach him instead of reaching out himself. Without the memories of the abuse he endured, he won't be as skittish about people's intentions, or whether they will show their true colors later on. Another way will be his willingness to trust people and make deeper connections. Currently, his MO is to keep his distance and keep work strictly about work without his co-workers butting into his business, however without knowing why he's distant, he'd actually be more willing to reach out and work with the people around him. Deep down, Jamie is a very kind and caring individual, who longs to be loved by someone who will treat him with respect. Without the memories that shaped him, he'd be able to make those connections without fear.

The memory of being stabbed multiple times in his flat by his ex, but not the outcome of the attack or who his ex is in relation to him. Jamie will recognize Jonah physically, and know that he causes fear in him, but it won't be obvious that he's his ex-boyfriend. While he survives this attack, the last thing Jamie will remember is losing consciousness and a lot of blood.

His skill with words and writing fiction. At the very least something to keep him occupied during long nights awake. He's always wanted to be a fiction writer, so this might be the jump start he needs.

Meeting Adam Nguyen at the bar Friday, slept with him, then immediately saw him at work the following Monday. He likes to keep his work and personal life separate, so this was quite a surprise.
